EXAMPLE 1: Poster for Students

I chose a poster as my genre for students. If you look around on campus often times all you see are posters. They can tell you everything from social events to mandatory academic meetings. As a developing culture college students don't take time to sit down and read a lengthy email or read a packet. They would much rather see a poster and get the information from it quickly and efficiently. It is important that the crucial information gets across quickly.

A: My first example of a poster I found appealing has defined spaces. I like that everything is spaced out evenly. It also has the basic information for the subject which is nice so that you do not have to dig for the information that you need. This is beneficial for students because we don't have a lot of time to stand around looking for information. We are constantly on the move. This can apply to my poster because of how the information is spaced out and the basic information. I do not like it because it is dark and is too serious for the topic I am discussing.

CRAP
Contrast- The black background with the lighter writing on top makes it pop out and draws your eye in.
Repetition- All of the words, background and picture give you an ominous feeling. It is constant repetition of a scary thought.
Alignment- The smaller information is aligned on the left side. The large print is in line with both paragraphs of information.
Proximity- The details of the paper are all grouped together so you don't have to look far for deeper information.

B: The second example I found has bright colors. It also has information spaced out and makes it easy to read. It also makes a direct point and is clever which causes more people to be captivated by it. Again it is a good idea for college campuses. I can apply the bright colors to my poster and the cheery emotions that it evokes.

CRAP
Contrast- The open pink space and the focus of the main picture draws your eye to the purpose of the poster.
Repetition- The repeat of the yellow in the photo draws your focus to the purpose behind it.
Alignment- Everything on the poster is centered.
Proximity- Everything is grouped in the center of the poster so all the information is revealed at once.

C: The third example of a poster is a good example of evoking emotion and targeting a direct audience. It also is very brief but you can still comprehend the purpose of the poster and the point it is trying to get across. This poster would probably not be the best for my information but I like the layout and the photos.

CRAP
Contrast: The red stop sign on top of the varying colors draws your attention to the purpose.
Repetition: The photos all seem very similar which gives a repeating theme of "stop."
Alignment: The photos are kept in straight lines and the words are centered.
Proximity: All the words are grouped together and all the photos are grouped together.

MY EAMPLE: My topic for the CLUE project was whether or not to be involved in marching band. The poster I have created is for incoming Freshman trying to decide if they would like to participate or not. It has a picture for the school to make it easier to identify the program. It also includes the main details about the program and essential information. The website provides a link to a web page with more information.

CRAP
Contrast: The black, white and strip of color on the poster add contrast so you follow the lines the poster.
Repetition: The repetition of bold headings and smaller print allow your eyes to gather the information you need quickly.
Alignment: The alignment on both sides of the paper is aligned with the sides of the paper.
Proximity: All the further details of the poster are on the left side allowing for easy to find information.


EXAMPLE 2: Resume for potential employer.

I chose a resume as my genre for potential employers. I feel like a resume is the most professional way to communicate the experiences you have had to an employer. It gives a potential employer a quick glimpse into your world and who you are. The resume is also used to give brief descriptions that allow for further explanation in an interview.

A: My first example of a resume for future employers is visually appealing. The horizontal lines make it very easy to follow and find what you are looking for. Employers want to know the information quick and do not want to have to search through pages of unorganized information. They also draw your attention. It reflects well on the potential employee because the lines show that they can keep information organized.

Contrast: The black and white keep it very professional.
Repetition: The repeating headings allow for quick reference points and show you a quick guide to what is important.
Alignment: The alignment on either side of the page is perfect for professional work.
Proximity: The different sections keep all of information about one topic all together.

B: My second example of a resume for potential employers also has lines but also organizes the information in a different way. The spacing on the side draws your eye closer to the information and in my opinion is more visually appealing than the other example. They have headings to divide the information but the lack of lines causes you to search a little more. I think either of these examples would draw the eye of an employer and help the potential employee to be hired.

Alignment: The alignment on one side of the page is very professional as well as the heading.
Proximity: All the information is grouped based on the content.

C: My third example of a resume for potential employers does not have lines and to me seems a little disorganized. I do not like the lack of separation and it does not catch your eye. If employers are looking through a stack of resumes they automatically pull the ones that look visually appealing and leave the others in the dust. I think this resume gets the information across but could present it in a better way.

Alignment: All of the information is aligned perfectly and in a pleasing way.
Proximity: The information is grouped based on content.

MY EXAMPLE: My example of a resume uses my topic as an experience in the resume. I felt this was a good way to use it because band allows you to grow as a leader and the stereotype of band students are that they are very smart. Now, I do not always condone stereotypes but this one can work to the advantage of the potential employee.

MY EXAMPLE: My example of a satire is in comic strip form. This satire is about how the college bands practice in all weather and their constant dismay towards it. We do practice but when we are in any type of weather not much gets done and there is a lot of standing around.

CRAP
Contrast: The black and white provide contrast and allows you to focus on the main idea of the satire.
Repetition: The same girl in every photo as well as having her with the same facial expression leads to the idea of a satire.
Alignment: All of the girls are aligned with their background.
Proximity: All of the words are in the same general place in each photo.
